Book Summary

Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.

Something is out there . . .

Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?

Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?

Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

I have only written one other book review in my life and it did not hold a candle to this book. I read this in one day because I could not put it down it is 333 in the morning and I am writing this review right after finishing this book. My stomach has been in knots and my body has been tense for hours. I would have to rate this book in my top 10 books of all times, and I’m 74 tomorrow so I’ve read a few books in my life. Dean Koontz is my favorite author although I do like Stephen King and a few others which all happen to be authors of horror books. Now I have another favorite author Josh Malerman! I will be Reading all of your books from now on so get busy I love to read. And thank you for having such a wonderful talent it is greatly appreciated
  • Fascinating premise, poorly written

King lovers and horror addicts - skip this one. The ‘acknowledgments’ page has more sass and reader engagement than the actual written story. The characters are flat, single-minded, and more boring than stock characters. It seems like a high school student writing a first draft for a horror prompt. C-, disappointing.

I loved this book. It is a gem. The writer knows how to make a character come alive. He knows how to create an atmosphere of terror, menace, and hope. The premise is beyond clever. It's devastating. A threat you can never ever directly perceive hovers over your shoulder and promises madness. The protagonist is agonized, human, and ferociously strong. Awesome book. Thank you for writing it.

This book was so engaging I had to stop reading on a couple of occasions because I didn't want it to end. It was an amazingly engaging thrill ride from start to finish. I loved how it managed to paint an extremely vivid threat without ever describing the creatures.

Amazing book! I found myself excited to come home and read (which is rare for me). The events are intriguing and keep you wondering what's next or better yet, what IS it ?!? I recommended this book to everyone I know! Now, this must be made into A movie next! Yes, it's that good.
  • King like? Ummmm.....no.

The description tries to compare this book's tone and feel to a King novel, and while I will concur that the theme is King like, well written it is not. It was painful to read and the characters were not crafted well enough to care about or invest in. All that being said the idea, though not well developed or presented is intriguing.
  • Captivating & surprising!
